On Sunday 25 August 2024, Ton Koopman was appointed 'Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres' by the French Ministry of Culture. This high distinction is a recognition for important contributions to the arts and literature, in particular for the enrichment of the French cultural heritage. Koopman receives this award in particular for the social impact of the Itineraire Baroque Festival in the Dordogne, which he founded 23 years ago.
Commandeur des Arts et des lettres is the highest award for artists in France. Koopman places himself in an illustrious list with, for example, Woody Allen and Brigitte Bardot. Dutchmen who have previously received this award are Hans van Manen, Ivo van Hove and Rem Koolhaas.
Ton Koopman: "I feel very honoured to receive this award from the French government in recognition of our work in setting up this special festival. We started the festival to open the doors of the Romanesque churches in the small villages and fill them with music. 23 years later, I am delighted that the festival has grown and has become a permanent part of the summer calendar, attracting visitors from far and wide.”
